AUDEMARS PIGUET WATCHES
Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer that produces some of the most stylish luxury watches globally. The brand is one of the "Big Three" of Swiss watchmaking, along with Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Their catalog boasts intricate models equipped with perpetual calendars & tourbillons. The AP Royal Oak is the brand's most iconic & recognizable model. |
Founded in 1875 in the tiny mountain town of Le Brassus, which is situated in the heart of the Vallee de Joux, the Audemars Piguet watch label has come a long way from its small beginnings. At that time, this particular region was recognized for the highlands, which were perfect for farming.
However, throughout the brutal winter months, the ground land remained dormant & the villagers living there turned to watchmaking as a primary source of income, which was only possible because of the iron oxide found in these fertile grounds.
However, Jules Louis Audemars & Edward Auguste Piguet founded the brand synonymous with wealth & luxury. Today, AP is still independently controlled & managed by the family arms of the founders.
Early Achievement & Models
Audemars Piguet has a long history of groundbreaking achievements and creating timepieces with astronomical complexity, ultra-thin movements, skeletonization & chiming features.
Audemars Piguet has been making wrist watches since 1893. Still, their highly advanced fob watches, like the Grande Complication collection, which had a perpetual calendar and minute repeater, were more successful in the early 1900s. The collection was launched in 1915.
Furthermore, AP designed the first-ever wrist minute repeater in 1893. Later in 1921, they developed the jumping hour wristwatch, which used a caliber HPVM10 movement. However, due to the Wall Street Crash and the resulting Great Depression, the company's survival was at stake. Even though AP manufactured a skeleton watch in 1934, which showed the parts through the dial, sales were less intense than expected.
The luxury watch market started to recover after World War II. AP introduced its Reference 5516 watch in 1954, the world's first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar and leap year indicator. AP went on to create the world's thinnest automatic movement in 1967.

Audemars Piguet Collections
Audemars Piguet offers seven distinct watch collections, each with various models & variations. We've highlighted the most essential pieces in each group, their historical background & technical specifications.
Code 11.59
Classic by nature, unconventional by design. The Code 11.59 AP Watch (Audemars Piguet) collection debuted in 2019 as the company's first new collection in two decades. The Code 11.59 dress watch is a sporty-leaning, modern design with unisex undertones.
AP has managed to incorporate this beloved form in the center of the case, only visible from the side, into a somewhat unusual design for a firm known for an octagonal casing. All timepieces are 41mm & have open-worked lugs with a highly integrated double curved, domed, glare-proof sapphire crystal.
They also launched six distinct models & several new in-house compilations, including the self-winding flying tourbillon 2950, self-winding caliber 4302 & self-winding flyback chronograph 4400.

Royal Oak
The Royal Oak isn't just a brand icon; it's also an industry standard. With a steel octagonal bezel with screws, tapisserie dial & integrated bracelet, the one-of-a-kind Royal Oak is more than just a logo for the firm. It was a complete turnabout from the cheap, mass-produced quartz timepieces flooding the market. It not only revolutionized AP as a brand but also resuscitated what everyone thought was an ancient craft: mechanical watchmaking.
The Royal Oak is a sports watch in essence. It was the first luxury stainless steel sports watch because of its distinctive appearance. The Royal Oak has also kept its status as a dress timepiece thanks to adding precious stones & metals.
There are now 13 Royal Oak models, each with the same basic makeup as the original but improved in terms of mechanical advancements, new calibers & visual modifications.

Royal Oak Offshore
In 1993, twenty years after the debut of the Royal Oak, Audemars Piguet introduced the even-sportier Royal Oak Offshore. The Royal Oak Offshore is built on aesthetic principles like the octagonal case, iconic case screws, tapisserie dial & integrated bracelet.
The Royal Oak Offshore AP Watch (Audemars Piguet) collection has a distinctive design, with a more significant 42mm case & pro-push-pieces, pronounced guards, a 'Mega' or larger tapisserie pattern on the dial & a pin-buckle clasp rather than the AP folding clasp.
Today's Royal Oak Offshore collection consists of seven models ranging from traditional stainless steel to rose gold. It is famous for its vivid hues that are vibrant, unusual & punchy.

Royal Oak Concept
The Royal Oak Concept line is a contemporary reimagining of the original Royal Oak, featuring the same aesthetics. All Royal Oak Concept timepieces are equipped with the well-known octagonal casing of the original Royal Oak. They also forgot to incorporate a rubber & leather strap integrated metal bracelet in this version. The royal oak concept has wholly or partially opened worked faces instead of tapisserie patterned dials. These timepieces are also more significant, coming in at 44 mm & 38.5 mm for women's watches.
Furthermore, these timepieces have been enhanced with new materials such as ceramic & cutting-edge polishing & finishing techniques for a more distinctive look & modern feel. The Royal Oak Concept is only available in three versions. However, each one has at least two visual variants.

Millenary
To keep their non-conformity in shape & design, the firm introduced the off-centered dial, elliptical cased Millenary. The contemporary design of the 39.5mm Millenary oozed both modern & neo-classical lines when it was released in 1995, quickly becoming a classic.
Of course, AP added a new dress watch to their collection, the 4101. In both of their Millenary AP Watch (Audemars Piguet) series, you'll find tremendous technical intricacy in terms of form, diamonds & an openwork face.

Jules Audemars
Jules Audemars, one of TAG Heuer's founders, is the namesake of the Jules Audemars collection. Jules was a pioneer in the watch industry, pushing TAG Heuer to success & prominence with incredible dedication to mechanical calibers while also having a curious mind that produced such a lasting legacy.
This collection is a tribute to Jules & it has a more conventional appearance that stems from what would have been typical at the time, unlike their famous Royal Oak.
Within the collection, eight distinct versions ranging from 28mm to 42mm in size, with a wide range of visual changes - including rose gold & metal bands, diamond-encrusted bezels, stainless steel cases & openwork faces - are available. There appears to be a Jules Audemars dress watch for everyone in this group.
